유럽에서는 서로서로의 언어를 배우는 일이 많으니까, 공통적으로 외국어 능력을 평가하는 기준이 마련된 것 같습니다. 매우 합리적인 레벨 구분인 것 같습니다. 초보자(A1,A2), 중급자(B1,B2), 상급자(C1,C2) 6단계 구분입니다.
이기준에 의하면, 나는 영어(C1),에스페란토(C1), 중국어(A1), 일본어(A1), 베트남어(A1)이네요. 나의 목표는, 영어(C2), 에스페란토(C2), 중국어(B2), 일본어(B2), 베트남어(B2) 입니다.
흔히 보는 외국어 시험과 레벨을 비교하면, 영어C2 == 토익 980+, 중국어 B2 == 신HSK 5급+, 일본어 B2 == JPT 750+ 수준 정도 될 것 같습니다.
외국어를 늙어 죽을 때까지 배우고만 있고 싶지는 않으니까, 앞으로 2년 바짝 노력해서 각 언어의 레벨을 급상승시켜 놓고, 그 후 부터는 활용에 촛점을 맞춰야 할 것 같습니다. 지금부터 2년을 투자해도, 적어도 30년 이상 활용할 수 있게 될 거니까, 마흔 넘은 나이에도 충분히 투자할 가치가 있는 것 같습니다.
외국어를 배우는 기본적인 이유는 "친구사귐" 이지만, 좀더 장기적이고 진지한 목표는 "저작/번역" 입니다. 늙어 죽기 전까지 좀 진지한 책 한권을 영어/에스페란토로 제대로 쓰거나 번역하는 것이 한가지 목표이고, 중국어/일본어/베트남어로는 일상적인 블로깅 수준의 가벼운 쓰기를 하는 것이 목표입니다. 2년후인 2014년에는 5개 언어에서 그런 레벨까지 가서, 외국어에서 자유로운 몸이 되게 해야 하겠습니다.

A. Basic User 기초 언어 사용자
A1. Breakthrough or beginner / 초심자
Can understand and use familiar everyday ｅxpressions and very basic phrases aimed at the satisfaction of needs of a concrete type.
구체적인 욕구 충족을 지향하는 익숙한 일상적 표현들과 아주 간단한 문장들을 이해하고 사용할 수 있다.
Can introduce him/herself and others and can ask and answer questions about personal details such as where he/she lives, people he/she knows and things he/she has.
자신과 타인을 남들에게 소개할 수 있으며, 다른 사람들에게 신상에 관하여 묻고 (예를 들어 어디에 사는지, 어떤 사람을 알고 있는지, 어떤 물건을 가지고 있는지 등) 이런 종류의 질문에 답할 수 있다.
Can interact in a simple way provided the other person talks slowly and clearly and is prepared to help.
대화상대자가 천천히 분명하게 말하고 도와줄 준비가 되어 있으면 간단한 방식으로 의사소통을 할 수 있다.
A2. Waystage or elementary / 초급
Can understand sentences and frequently used ｅxpressions related to areas of most immediate relevance (e.g. very basic personal and family information, shopping, local geography, employment).
아주 직접적으로 중요한 분야 (예컨대 신상, 가족, 물건구입, 업무, 가까운 주변지역에 관한 정보)와 관련된 문장과 자주 사용되는 표현들을 이해할 수 있다.
Can communicate in simple and routine tasks requiring a simple and direct exchange of information on familiar and routine matters.
반복적이고 단순한 상황에서 일반적이고 익숙한 문제에 대해 간단하고 직접적인 정보교환으로서의 의사소통을 할 수 있다.
Can describe in simple terms aspects of his/her background, immediate environment and matters in areas of immediate need.
간단한 수단으로 자신의 출신과 교육, 직접적인 주변지역, 직접적인 필요와 관련된 내용을 기술할 수 있다.
B. Independent User 자립적 언어 사용자
B1. Threshold or intermediate / 문턱
Can understand the main points of clear standard input on familiar matters regularly encountered in work, school, leisure, etc.
명확한 표준어를 사용하며 업무, 학교, 여가시간 등과 같이 익숙한 주제에서 요점을 이해할 수 있다.
Can deal with most situations likely to arise whilst travelling in an area where the language is spoken.
해당 언어의 사용지역을 여행하면서 마주치게 되는 대부분의 상황을 극복할 수 있다.
Can produce simple connected text on topics which are familiar or of personal interest.
익숙한 주제와 개인적인 관심분야에 대해 간단하고 조리있게 표현할 수 있다.
Can describe experiences and events, dreams, hopes & ambitions and briefly give reasons and explanations for opinions and plans.
경험과 사건에 대해 보고할 수 있고, 꿈과 희망, 목표를 기술할 수 있으며, 계획과 견해에 대해 짤막하게 근거를 제시하거나 설명할 수 있다.
B2. Vantage or upper intermediate / 자립
Can understand the main ideas of complex text on both concrete and abstract topics, including technical discussions in his/her field of specialisation.
구체적이거나 추상적인 주제를 다루는 복합적인 텍스트의 주요 내용을 이해할 수 있다. 자신의 전문분야에서의 전문적인 토론도 이해한다.
Can interact with a degree of fluency and spontaneity that makes regular interaction with native speakers quite possible without strain for either party.
쌍방 간에 큰 노력 없이 모어 화자와 자연스러운 대화를 할 수 있을 만큼 유창하게 의사소통을 할 수 있다.
Can produce clear, detailed text on a wide range of subjects and explain a viewpoint on a topical issue giving the advantages and disadvantages of various options.
폭넓고 다양한 주제에 대해 분명하고 상세하게 의사표현을 할 수 있고 시사문제에 대한 입장을 설명하고 다양한 가능성들의 장단점을 제시할 수 있다.
C. Proficient User 숙달된 언어 사용자
C1. Effective Operational Proficiency or advanced / 자율
Can understand a wide range of demanding, longer texts, and recognise implicit meaning.
수준높은 비교적 긴 텍스트의 폭넓고 다양한 주제를 이해하고 내포된 의미도 파악할 수 있다.
Can express him/herself fluently and spontaneously without much obvious searching for ｅxpressions.
준비 없이도 유창하게 의사표현을 할 수 있으며 이때 겉으로 확연히 드러나게 어휘를 찾는 일이 별로 없다.
Can use language flexibly and effectively for social, academic and professional purposes.
사회 및 직업생활, 대학교육과 직업교육에서 언어를 효과적이고 유연하게 사용할 수 있다.
Can produce clear, well-structured, detailed text on complex subjects, showing controlled use of organisational patterns, connectors and cohesive devices.
복합적인 사안에 대해 분명하고 체계적이며 상세하게 의사표현을 할 수 있으며 이때 텍스트 연결을 위한 다양한 수단을 적절하게 사용할 수 있다.
C2. Mastery or proficiency
Can understand with ease virtually everything heard or read. / 숙달
읽거나 들은 것을 거의 모두 힘들이지 않고 이해할 수 있다.
Can summarise information from different spoken and written sources, reconstructing arguments and accounts in a coherent presentation.
문어와 구어로 된 다양한 자료에서 나온 정보를 요약할 수 있으며 이때 그 근거와 설명을 조리있게 재구성할 수 있다.
Can express him/herself spontaneously, very fluently and precisely, differentiating finer shades of meaning even in the most complex situations.
준비 없이도 아주 유창하고 정확하게 의사표현을 할 수 있고 복합적인 사안을 다룰 때에도 비교적 섬세한 의미차이를 구별하여 표현할 수 있다.
